One of the most common requests we get as landscape designers in the Pacific Northwest is for deer-resistant plants. There are tons of resources online, but not all of them hold true for the deer we find locally. As a general rule of thumb, plants that have thorns or a strong scent deter deer from snacking on them.
If you have your heart set on a plant that is not deer-resistant, try placing deer-resistant plants around the perimeter of your garden to keep the deer from venturing further into your garden. For example, if you have your heart set on hydrangeas (we love them!), then choose an oak leaf hydrangea, set it near the back or center of your garden, and line the front of the garden with lavender and boxwood. The layering effect of these three plants is also a timeless design!
