This year has us rethinking how to make the most of our interior spaces. With our weekly trips to the park and children’s museum on hold, and the weather turning, we needed to create a playroom in our home. That meant our 6-month-old and three year old would share a bedroom.
Designing a space for an infant and toddler is definitely a balance between creating somewhere your little ones AND you want to spend time in. I wanted the room to be bright and warm, neutral yet a little girly (my daughter’s favorite color is pink), and, most importantly, a little whimsical for that added touch of childhood magic!
The wall color throughout our home (Sherwin Williams – Agreeable Gray), and I love it! Building off the neutral tones, I opted for a white roman shade instead of drapes for a few reasons – first, I didn’t want to invest in drapes only for my girls to pull on them constantly, and second, I needed the wall space for the bed. I also like that I can layer drapes on either side of the shade later on if I want. So far they are an excellent choice!
When designing our home, I had pre-planned where furniture in each bedroom would go so I could have outlets placed for lamps/sconces on either side of the bed. Since there was a twin bed and a crib to accommodate, I utilized that same wall, but push the beds to the outsides of the room to create a place to play. Since this room is intended for rest and not play, I brought in quiet toys by placing a bookcase filled with board books and stuffed animals in the center of the wall.
The crib is a traditional style in white, and either has a gray polka-dot or faded yellow star sheets. The twin bed is actually my husband’s captains bed from his childhood. We have debated refinishing it and changing the color, but I am not a DIY-er, and so I chose a queen-sized comforter/duvet to fall to the floor and cover the bed frame.
At the end of the twin bed is a basket filled with folded blankets and steps to reach the bed and, because the crib is shorter than the twin bed, I had the perfect place to make a spot for myself. 🙂
We were in the process of building our home when we had our first daughter, and so having a dedicated nursery wasn’t an option. So, when we knew we had baby girl number two on the way, a big, cozy, rocking chair was on the top of my list. I am 5’9″ and the number one thing I was searching for in a chair was a high back and a deep seat so I could rest my head and curl up in the chair. I sit in that little corner multiple times a day either with girls cuddled up on my lap, or working while they do quiet time.
To bring that childhood magic to the atmosphere I added gold glitter butterflies above the bookcase and a butterfly mobile hanging in the center of the room. I’m sure I will continue to add and change this room as the girls grow, but for now it is one of our favorite places to be. Up next – the playroom!
