Hello! Over the past few weeks I have had so many friends and family asking my advice for how to refresh their home for the new year. My previous blogs talk about easy ways to refresh your front landscape, so today I am focusing on interior spaces. While there are SO many ways to accomplish this, these are the top five that are simple and the most cost effective.
No. 1 – Pillows
Grabbing yourself a few new throw pillows can go a long way! With a cat and little ones in my house, I love the throw pillows from the Hearth & Hand with Magnolia collection at Target. The price point is great, the pillows are super soft, and they work in every room of my home so I can mix them around throughout the year when a space begins to feel stale. You can also give a fresh feel to your space without needing to purchase all new pillows by switching them up and move them to new rooms. For a space, such as a dining room, find a new table runner and add some greenery. Don’t be afraid to go oversized on your centerpiece! I have a 6′ round table in my dining room and picked up this larger faux maidenhair fern at Target to use as a centerpiece. Go one step further and place it in a ceramic vase to add even more texture to the space.
No. 2 – Photos
Have family photos around your home? Look into updating the frames and/or printing newer photos. I place our family photos on the shelves in our office/library and sideboard in the living/dining area. Once or twice a year I will print new photos to place in the frames and it’s is always amazing to me how such a small (and inexpensive) change can bring me so much joy! I also am starting on a small project for our staircase that will incorporate more photos and new frames. I’ll share all the details in another blog!
No. 3 – Furniture
Take a couple of rooms and rearrange the furniture! I did this in my girls’ rooms this fall by taking our separate nursery and toddler room and combining them into one space so the other room could be transformed into a playroom. I used existing furniture and décor to create an entirely new bedroom for the girls. It cost me nothing and it made the room more beautiful and functional for our family!
No. 4 – Greenery
While I have a green thumb outdoors, anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I cannot keep a house plant alive, so faux greenery is where it’s at for me! You can find great ones at Target, Pottery Barn and Amazon. I specifically love the look of the Threshold line at Target for a great price point and quality. You can place these on the floor, a shelf, countertop, or table to bring an organic texture to the space. If you aren’t sure of where to start, buy three different sizes and place them around your home. When I bring a new plant home, I carry it around from room to room, placing it in different spots until I find where it makes me happy. 🙂
No. 5 – Paint
I can’t tell you how many friends I have who don’t love the color of the walls in their home! This is a larger project to tackle, but it will have a major impact on how you feel about your home, so if you are up to the challenge, I highly recommend it! Unless there is another design element in play, I recommend painting the entire space (walls and ceiling) the same color. Here are my favorite colors to provide a warm, neutral backdrop that will also brighten up your home!

- Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams
